After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night
O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format. But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. I do not mean to single out Glover and Erskine here. Keri Russell, a ruthless and complicated Russian spy in “The Americans,” is now in “The Diplomat,” a forgettably fun dramedy.

Though architectural styles and ideals have changed time and time again, the pursuit of nature-centric and nature-honoring construction has rarely wavered. Integrating homes with nature has been both a specific design choice (as was the case with modern architects like Frank Lloyd Wright) to a solution for building in difficult terrains (such as these homes built into cliffs). Even homes that aren’t specifically designed to blend with nature are crafted with stunning views, manicured gardens, or other amenities that take into account the outside world.

There’s a certain kind of freedom that exists in far West Texas amid the ombré boulders and ocotillo, one that placates a sense of wanderlust. Terlingua is a town that is hard to explain to people who have yet to spend time here. Seemingly lawless, free-spirited, adventurous, outrageous terrain, remote as hell and completely itself. The personality of the town is reason enough to make the journey, but Terlingua’s unbelievable location makes it a destination for travelers around the world. There is magic and energy in this area that one must experience to understand. Willow House No. 6 is a small casita complete with a King bed, private bathroom with rain shower, AC/heat and small private patio. Willow House No. 5 is a small casita complete with a King bed, private bathroom with rain shower, AC/heat and small private patio. Another important element for Werner was the weather. West Texas summers are notoriously brutal and often surpass 100 degrees with intense UV exposure, while at other times 70 or 80 mile-per-hour winds and sweeping desert storms are the norm. Thus, the darkly colored concrete casitas have been dutifully insulated and feature slits on the covered patios to allow for comfortable airflow. There are also built-in exterior benches so guests can enjoy a cocktail with friends or head off to sleep under the stars.
Lauren Werner has never been one to overthink things. The first-time hotelier opened Willow House in Terlingua, Texas about five years ago to much critical acclaim. From design to architecture to construction to overall vision, Werner is the sole mastermind behind the hotel. Inside the gas station is Big Bend Resort & Adventures Café which serves simple cafeteria style meals.

We mixed design elements from high desert areas with warm modernism and a hint of inspiration from Georgia O'Keeffe's unforgettable southwestern style. In all design decisions, we chose to use colors and textures that naturally existed on the land. For rock walls and pathways throughout the property, we used rocks that we sourced and collected from various areas of the property. For the shade structures, we used dead ocotillo branches we found around the property. In order to build structures that stand the test of time, we have used high-quality materials that are durable in a climate that can be dramatic.

Location to Big Bend was really good, the rooms were very clean and the staff was very nice. The restaurant on site was very good and everything on property was close in proximity. Sophisticated offerings considering how remote Marfa is. They carry everything from essentials (olive oil, eggs, butter) to unlikely Marfa finds (wide selection of Kombucha, specialty hummus).
Performances by leading artists in contemporary and regional music add dimension to the lively 5-day event. Since the 19th century, accounts of strange and unexplained source-less dancing lights have mystified visitors and generations of West Texas natives. The official Marfa Lights Viewing Area is located 9 miles east of town on Highway 90, towards Alpine. The Marfa Visitor center recommends you bring an open mind.
Detached from the Main House, there are two outdoor showers for all guests to use. She ended up finding the perfect location, 200-plus acres of an old Terlinguan ranch with flat, buildable land with breathtaking views of the mountains. Willow House is a desert retreat located 6 miles from Big Bend National Park and just outside the center of Terlingua, Texas.
‘Nearly everything here was either done by an artist who resides in West Texas or through a residency at Willow House’. ‘I took two separate trips out to Farmville,’ Werner says of the latter. ‘They have 17 massive warehouses full of goodies that any interior designer would go nuts over’. However, an open, warm community space featuring a kitchen, living area and outdoor fire pit at the heart of the property paves the way for visitors to mix a drink and make new friends. The real draw inside the main house is the sunken sitting area.

The Saint George Hotel, the newest and 'fanciest' of the Marfa hotel offerings, feels like it could be located in a number of cities across the country. Willow House is putting Texas' Terlingua on the design map.
It is clean, high quality, and offers more services than any other hotel in the area. However, if you are looking for a one time only true Marfa experience, this is probably not your best option. Over the next few years, Werner’s vision for the project began to take form. Inspired by the hospitality experience at friends’ West Texas ranches, she imagined individual casitas grouped around a main house. A central, communal experience, paired with the private seclusion of stand alone guest quarters. The alluring beauty of the Chisos Mountains is nearly indescribable—its rugged arcs giving way to miles of desert terrain.

Marfa is the town most commonly synonymous with design in Far West Texas, but Willow House is putting another destination on the map. Located in Terlingua, just miles from Big Bend National Park, the desert retreat is comprised of 12 casitas that sit over 250 acres of land. Werner says that though the structures are modern in design, they are ‘completely in tune’ with the beauty of the Big Bend. Their minimal nature doesn’t distract from the setting, she explains. There is not a spot on the property where Werner’s love for the desert can’t be felt. ‘I want it to respect the location and the colors of the natural landscape,’ she muses.
See what guests loved the most:
With a seasoned team handling construction and architecture, I’m excited to see how Lauren Werner’s intuitive eye for a good hospitality concept and design will continue to shine. Reflecting and showcasing the surrounding desert landscape was a core tenant of the project from the beginning, a quality that Werner felt was lacking in the available accomodations in the area. Born and raised in Southern California, Lauren Werner’s introduction to Texas began during her time studying at Southern Methodist University. She graduated with a pre-law degree and began working in commercial real estate in Dallas, but was quickly convinced that she wanted to start a project of her own.

You can order at the counter, call in for pick-up, or enjoy pizza by the slice. I grab a bottle of red wine, sit at the folding tables, and decompress. The Big Bend is named for the vast curve of the Rio Grande in remote southwest Texas. It is a wildly beautiful natural region, with a complex and fascinating history. On a road trip with a friend to Santa Fe in 2017, she heard word about a piece of land, just under 300 acres, with spectacular, unobstructed views of the Chisos Mountains. She redirected their trip to Terlingua, saw the land, and made an offer on the spot for the piece of desert that would go on to be the home of Willow House.
Three beautiful courtyards separate this house from the others. The second has an outdoor shower, a handsome outdoor fireplace, kitchen sink and counter, and the cabin, all enclosed by a 5 foot rock wall for privacy. Inside, Werner payed homage to Terlingua’s natural beauty. Off the main house are the 12 casitas, which range from 250 square feet to 600 square feet.
It offers incomparable views, easy access, and a unique Big Bend experience. Throughout the construction process, Werner slept on a mattress in whatever room wasn’t being worked on, and she still stayed around after Willow House opened in June 2019. She shared her story with guests, observed how people used the space and made continuous plans to improve the hotel based on these observations. People were using the communal kitchen more often than expected? La Kiva, a local tradition in Terlingua, is carved out of massive sandstone boulders.

Home to The Big Bend Sentinel and Presidio International, The Sentinel is a coffee shop, restaurant, bar and event venue supporting local, independent journalism in Marfa, Texas. I am always pleasantly surprised to find all ingredients to make an impressive charcuterie board at The Get Go. The Saint George restaurant has good food, cocktails, and most importantly... Coffee and cocktails are served all day until 3pm. “There was nowhere that I had seen around Big Bend that focused on the Chisos as the primary view, which is the whole reason people go out to Big Bend,” Werner said. At age 25, Werner first visited the Big Bend area on a solo road trip to West Texas. She was struck by the beauty of the land and instantly fell in love with the area.

The retreat is situated on a 250-acre ranch and is comprised of 12 private concrete casitas. Decked out in desert hues and vintage furnishings, each one exudes rugged sophistication. Some include private patios and outdoor showers but they all feature sweeping vistas of the local peaks. At the center of the property is the main house. Equipped with a chef's kitchen, guests are encouraged to whip up some grub and mingle around the campfire for alfresco dining under the stars. The Guest House is the most private of the home rentals and features 3 beautiful courtyards.

It’s been nearly five years since Willow House opened, and Werner feels that the hotel is hitting its stride. After several big additions over the years — such as the yoga deck, manager’s house, and the pool – there are no further plans for construction from this point forward. What Werner lacked in experience, she made up for with confidence in her vision, a knack for creating compelling spaces, and pure determination. Guests have full access to all communal spaces described in the Main House description.
There’s a separate private bathroom in the flower garden with sink, flush toilet, and a bathtub. The Willow House concept was born after a trip to Big Bend National Park that sparked a love for Far West Texas and the freedom that comes with exploring this remote part of the world. We set out to offer our guests a unique place to stay, unlike anything else in the area.
"Look for natural mulches like pine straw, shredded bark, or dead leaves. A lot of clay soils, for example, store the water in the soil in the winter and then bake solid in the summer. In time, you may want to move plants that have emerged but might be in the wrong place. She has plans to add even more to the area before the Crescent Hill Garden Tour on June 1. The lush space is currently mostly green, but Patti has plans to incorporate some pops of pink.
Vertical elements, such as living wall ideas, will make a garden design fuller, as will the hardscaping materials you choose. Think, too, about structures such as pergolas, and focal points, such as groups of containers and garden sculptures. For a long and narrow garden, the key is to avoid the gaze being drawn straight to the end, so dividing the space into perhaps three squarer zones with distinct features can divert the viewer to different aspects of the garden. If you want to know how to make a small garden look bigger, divide it into separate zones, which will give the illusion of a larger space. Use verticals such as tall, narrow trees, pergolas, and green walls, too, which can distract from boundaries and give the eye plenty to appreciate. The mix of materials that's most eco-friendly for your area will depend on your climate.
"Ground covers can also suppress weeds as they form a dense cover on the soil." Additionally, ground covers provide habitat and food sources for wildlife and beneficial pollinators. Enclosed by this cluster of white, pitched-roofed “houses”, the 2nd-floor courtyard forms a central landscaped gathering space for the small community. With careful consideration given to the distance, orientation, and arrangement of balconies overlooking the courtyard, the result is a private, tranquil, convenient interaction between residents and the “secret garden” which they share. The exterior of the base is covered in native planting, drought-tolerant succulents and vines, which make it the "largest living wall" in the US, according to the studio.

Planting can be combined with many structures to boost shade, and climbers with both flowers and scent add to the attractiveness of a garden feature. But trees and large shrubs can also introduce the shaded areas a garden needs. Both structures and planting, and sometimes a combination of the two, can introduce shade that makes the garden and surrounding yard more enjoyable. ‘Create interest in your garden by screening certain areas to create intrigue and encourage people to explore the whole space,’ recommends Ed Oddy.

For a more affordable alternative to sprinklers, simply use your hose or a watering can. "A hose gives you more control over how long the water is on and where the water is delivered." says Langelo. "By targeting water at the plant’s base and waiting for it to pool, we are watering more effectively. After it pools, wait until that drains and do it again until you know the water is at the root zone." Drip irrigation systems provide water directly to the roots of your plants, which saves water and minimizes runoff. "You can install a drip system yourself or hire a professional for a larger area," says Misti Mathis, Co-owner of Harvest Gold Organics.

Essential information about The Garden House
"Los Angeles and Beverly Hills are highly modernised and developed," said MAD founder Ma Yansong. "Their residences on the hills seemingly coexist with the urban environment. However, they also see enclosed movement at their core." As its first project in America, Gardenhouse provided the opportunity for the firm to experiment with its Shanshui City concept, which aims to translate Chineses landscape paintings, known as shan-shui, into architecture. Composed of 18 gabled residences set on top of a three-storey podium largely covered in planting, the 4,460-square-metre complex at 8600 Wilshire Boulevard, is MAD's first completed project in the US.

Companion planting, or planting plants that are symbiotic together, is a way to ensure your garden stays healthy. Companion plants offer benefits to one another depending on the pairing, and can include shade, pest deterrence, and improved soil quality. "Support your local ecosystem by shrinking your lawn and replacing the monoculture of grass with native plants instead." "It has like this wild garden feel, but very, like sophisticated in a way. Located at 8600 Wilshire Boulevard in California’s Beverly Hills, “Gardenhouse” is a mixed-use scheme consisting of 18 residential units above ground-floor commercial space. Evoking the lush landscape of Beverly Hills, the scheme becomes a “hillside village” with residential units “growing” from the building’s living green wall. Peaking above the landscaped envelope, a cluster of white façaded, irregular-shaped windows and gabled-roof structures create a dynamic neighborhood, and a playful, witty, though simple homage to the iconic hillsides of Los Angeles.
For a modern garden, porcelain and natural limestone patio ideas work well, along with concrete, metal and wood. More traditional gardens could mix stone, brick and gravel with wood, for example. Smart garden landscaping ideas teamed with the right materials will create a complementary style of garden, be it modern, cottage, traditional or formal. For more formal gardens, straight lines predominate with rectangular borders and squares and even octagons for beds, along with circles. For more informal gardens, think gently curvaceous borders and, while beds might be circular, soft teardrop shapes are popular, too. Understanding your soil type will also help you determine the types of plants that'll work best for your yard, or how to properly nourish your soil to support the plants you wish to grow.
In 1305 the Bishop instructed the Abbot to build a house for the parish priest and this site was chosen. At the dissolution of the monasteries, the Abbot became the vicar of Buckland Monachorum and by the early 1700s, the vicarage consisted of a substantial 3-storey dwelling. The remains of this building, a tower with spiral staircase and a thatched barn, formerly the kitchen, are now the romantic ruins on the lower terrace in the walled garden. The Garden House works in partnership with the Professional Gardeners Guild and their three year Guild Diploma, during which students spend one year in each of three different gardens. A modern vicarage was built in the 1920s and The Garden House was sold as a private dwelling. The house came onto the market again just after the Second World War and was purchased by Lionel Fortescue, a retiring master at Eton, and his wife Katharine. By 1961 they had established the Fortescue Garden Trust, an independent registered charity, to which they bequeathed the house and garden to ensure the survival of this beautiful place for future generations. After their deaths in the 1980s ownership passed to the charity, which maintains the Fortescues’ lovely legacy.
"The plant growth leads to a surge in microorganisms, which consume oxygen at high rates and create dead zones. In these zones, dissolved oxygen levels are so dangerously low that aquatic animals like fish cannot survive." Collect seeds from the plants growing in your garden and save them for sowing next year. "Seed saving can be beneficial to protect crops against diseases and helps the plant become better adapted to its growing conditions, making it more dependable," says Carrie Spoonemore, co-creator of Park Seed's From Seed to Spoon app. "By growing a crop that is well-adapted to your area, you will likely increase the crop’s yield." Store your seeds in a labeled, airtight container and keep them in a cool, dry location. Gardenhouse is a creative vision for the future where architecture and nature coalesce to elevate the living environment.
Most plants prefer a slightly acidic soil, with a pH level of about 6-7, though some prefer a more neutral or alkaline soil. Before you design your garden, it's a good idea to take an assessment of your yard and your location to determine which plants will thrive there. ” It sounds like the kind of question a five-year-old would ask, but dwell a little on that thought and you start realizing it’s quite an intriguing question. Stroll around the colourful, romantic gardens, including the Summer Garden, Cottage Garden, the Acer Glade (with its stunning autumn colour), the Walled Garden and the Jubilee Arboretum and you’ll enjoy finding new views at every turn. The event enabled the historical association to fulfill its mission to educate on 18th-century living, David Bradford and the Whiskey Rebellion.
In a hot, arid area like Southern California or the American Southwest, succulent plant and hardscaping will be more efficient than a lawn and verdant garden beds, which will require a ton of watering. 'Wherever possible the style of garden should complement the period and architecture of the house. Smart garden wall ideas can link the garden directly to the architecture of your house. Add the latter to the plan first, then mark on both the desired hardscape (like paths, paving and deck ideas) and softscape (like lawns, beds and borders). You may also want to consider greenhouse ideas or additional garden buildings. The gardens are now open to the public and are home to a number of historical features, including the ruins of the old vicarage, a 14th-century barn, and a 17th-century dovecote.

They’re so welcoming and passionate about helping their clients/providing excellent service.Special shout out to Phil, Midwood’s luthier. This guy does some very professional work, and man can he do it fast. His experience really shines through both his craft and communication skills. He set up my Custom 24 SE and added some pick-up covers in under a day’s time even though he had a massive queue of projects. Pricing was very reasonable for the quality of work. He answered all of my questions, no matter how silly they were, and I can confidently say that my guitar plays the better than anything I’ve touched in the last 15 years.

The best guitar shop in Charlotte, and I never go anywhere else when I'm in the market for strings, an amp, a pedal, or a new guitar. Awesome selection, very friendly staff. I had to drive a couple hours to get there and was definitely worth the trip. I went in to look for possibly a new Stratocaster style guitar and Jake was extremely friendly and helpful. A counterpoint to the posh white marble of the primary bath, the look of this second bath is at once equally gorgeous yet quite unique. The most defining aspects are the vintage console-turned-vanity with exquisite patina, the antique style brass hardware and the laundered natural linens for a relaxed aura. Still, crisp straight lines, a sleek tub and simple styling lend an ‘of-the-moment’ sensibility.
French Country Home Interiors
Although "provincial" can often mean "unsophisticated," these sprawling, country homes were anything but. We spoke with Véra Kempf, co-founder of SINGULART and a Southeastern France native, who weighs in with all sorts of useful design tips that will help you bring your vision to life. Below, Kempf shares key steps to follow in order to add all sorts of Parisian glam to your space in no time. But an inviting porch nods to classic American ranch homes, creating a unique marriage of architectural influences. Aged materials and antique-inspired details combine to give this new French country home an old-world style. The stucco siding features a weathered finish and white shutters quaintly accent multi-paned windows. Typically a prominent part of the exterior's design, this style features four sloping sides that meet in a ridge along the top.
That gorgeous stone on the back wall adds so much character and texture, as does the stunning range hood. The French welcome the character of aged wood, chipped paint, and burnished metal. Give your home a sense of history with items that gracefully show their age, such as a mirror that's scuffed and speckled with age spots or an antique painted table with a peeling finish. Part of the simplicity of French-style interiors comes from the color palette.
With their lovely glass panes extending the length of the door, they allow an abundance of natural light in, helping to keep the interior light and airy. Unlike the clean and crisp lines of the modern style, French adheres to a softer, curvy, and comfortable setting that is meant to be cozy, simple, and plush. There is something so magical about the French Country style that cannot be replicated easily. The rustic and natural feel keeps one tucked away in the French Village, with its creative moldings and classical fabric, floral, tapestries, and motifs highlighted. French homes feature a tall, sloping roof with all four corners pointed to the ground. Mostly tiled with clay, or barrel-shaped tiles, these roofs are highly influenced by earthy tones such as brown, red, and beige.
It functions as a bridge between the creamier living room and the stark white kitchen that follows. The space above is the quintessential example of vintage and modern, with Old World architectural detailing and antique accents, mixed with a tailored layout and crisp symmetry. That the room can comfortably host both an ultra-modern coffee table and aged sideboard is testament to the deft mix. The soft palette is particularly inviting, while the antique vellum books and gilded lighting capture my heart. Perhaps the one room in the house that should most represent one’s style, the living room affords us the opportunity to best express our taste. Unhindered by requirements like appliances and cabinetry, this room only needs to provide comfort for when we’re relaxing and being entertained.
The country manors and massive chateaux homes they saw during their time in Europe inspired them to build similarly styled homes back in the U.S. Although French Provincial style hasn't become has widely popular as architectural styles inspired by Britain and the United Kingdom, it experienced major surges in popularity during the 1920s and 1960s. Known for its stately, manor-like appearance, French Provincial architecture has been a popular building style since the 1600s and remains a popular pick today. Typically, French Provincial homes were constructed by French aristocrats in the provinces—or rural areas—outside of Paris. According to Kempf, nothing says "French home" like a chandelier or a suspension, especially in the living or dining area. The aforementioned photograph wasn’t the only souvenir from their New York residence to accompany the McIntyres on their move. “They have a very timeless sense of style, so there was a lot of overlap,” Gray observes. The photograph now presides over the kitchen dining nook like an organic, unforced motto when they cook, eat together, and entertain.

Featuring both rustic and classic elements, this stunning European farmhouse style home creates a stunning picture of modern French country living. Your home might not have the intricate ceiling moldings and herringbone floors of a penthouse off the Seine, but you can still play up a room's architectural details. Draw attention to an elegant fireplace mantel with decorative vases or art, or forego a rug to highlight the richness of your wood flooring.
Intricate carving and painted wood, as seen on these chairs and buffet, is a common element of French country decor. You can instantly elevate a space with humble bones by hanging a delicate crystal chandelier or mounting a gilded antique mirror. Choose just one or two glitzy accessories to introduce an air of luxury without going all-out glam. As previously mentioned, the largest concentration of French Colonial structures can be found in urban and rural Louisiana. The Garden District of New Orleans boasts hundreds of beautiful, traditional French Colonial homes, while rural Louisiana offers expansive plantation homes built in the French Colonial style.
This stunning bedroom was designed by Brittany Jones, whose many projects I have featured before. Everything celebrates the beauty of patina and Euro-style, while delivering a room that’s as updated as can be. If I had to pick a room that represents the quintessence of my direction in decor, it would be this bedroom. I personally have not yet achieved this level of rustic chic in my own home, but this is a pretty good summary of my goal.
A large chimney, turret, front patio, and foundation are all impressive, thanks to a medley of warm stonework. Romantic arched windows, French doors, and shutters carry out the home's French-inspired theme, lending this home a patina well beyond its actual years. Built in Federal style in the 19th century, this early American home was heavily influenced by French architecture. The home boasts French blue shutters, tall windows capped with window lintels, and cozy dormers on its uppermost level. The mansard roof, which features four double-sloped sides, is characteristic of French country homes.
